The Spaniard Fernando Savater is a professor of European philosophy and literature and a liberal thinker on politics and religion. However, he is best known for his role in fighting terrorism in the Basque Country. In the year 2000, the founder of the Basta Ya (Enough already) movement was the first recipient of the Sakharov price, awarded by the European Parliament, for his defence of human rights. Facing death threats from the ETA terrorist organisation, Savater just founded a new political party, called Unity, Progress and Democracy which will take part in general elections on March 9.
